upgrading / dictionary

Hi,

I'd like to upgrade from Word 9 to Word X, and I was wondering how I
would be able to transfer my custom dictionary from 9 to X properly.

Thanks!

Hi Ahmed,

I should know the answer to this question but I don't (or else I've
forgotten it along with myriad other things, it seems :).

First, I'm not sure the Word 9 Custom Dictionary can even be transferred to
Word X because the two versions work with entirely different operating
systems. If it *is* possible, here's how you can test it.

You'll find the Word 9 Custom Dictionary here: System folder> Preferences>
Microsoft. Make a copy of it and send it to a (willing :) friend or
colleague who's using Word X. Have them rename their own Custom Dictionary
(with Word X closed, of course) and insert yours. When they reopen Word,
you'll both find out whether or not this worked! To restore their own
CustDict, all they have to do is trash yours and rename their own back.

If you try this, please report back on the results. Thanks and sorry not to
be more definitive.

Hi Ahmed:

Beth's right: you simply copy the file into the correct place. The "Custom
Dictionary" is a simple text file. It's the "MAIN" dictionary that you
cannot transfer...

I prefer to rename my custom dictionary to something less generic and move
it outside the Office folder, so that it does not get blown away if I do a
drag-and-drop installation.

Hope this helps
