Upgrading from Microsoft 4.0 (1995) to Word 2004

A

andrew.davis

Version I have is Macintosh Microsoft Word 4.0 from year 1995 and
there's just floppy discs in the box.

Does anybody know if the Microsoft Word upgrade 2004 (which costs
around £70) will upgrade software that is ten years old which I have
and own the licence number for?

Hi,

you need to own Word 98 / Office 98 (or higher) in order to buy the upgrade,
sorry.

Thanks Michel. Will wait to buy new Office 2008 for Macintosh which I
understand is out second half 2007 in the UK.

Sounds like Michael assumed you were using a PC. IF you were he is right.

On Mac it was either Office95 or word95 which I still have disk for,
Then I had to go to Office2001 for OS9
Then to Office 2004 for OSX. Hopefully I will be able to update to 2008.
I think the last time I had to buy the full Package for 2004 because 200
was an upgradeable product. But its been so long I am unsure.

Thanks Michel. Will wait to buy new Office 2008 for Macintosh which I

No, I did not assume that. The link I posted below my reply indicates that
you need to own a license for Office 98, 2001 or v.X in order to be eligible
for the upgrade to Office 2004. Andrew only has a copy of Word 4.0, which is
why he cannot buy the upgrade version.

That's Okay. My bad. It sounded like you were referencing word 4 which
was a PC Product. And so far as I knew you can not "upgrade/update from
one platform to another. So I filled in the upgrade sequence for Mac

Word/Office95 to Word/Office2001 to Word/office2004.

and then was wondering if Office2004 would be upgradeable to Office 2008.

One thing I am finding though is if Its like Acrobat and other products
it only will work on X.4.3 or later. For some strange reason I've never
been able to Upgrade from X.3.9 on my Desktop Unit. So 2004 will
probably be the end of the line until X.5 comes out.

Come to think of it I believe the Official name for Office Mac at the
time of Word95/Excel95 was "Office 4.2. for Mac".

Hi Phillip,

out of curiosity, I checked Wikipedia to find out some more about the
earlier versions of Word. The first version of Word I used (back then when I
was still young and naive) was Word 97 on a PC, so I don't really know that
much about what had had been going on before that. According to the list in
said article, there *was* a Word version 4 for Macintosh; however, there has
never been a Word 95 for Macintosh. I had my doubts about that, as I
remember that there was a Windows version of Word that was called Word 95,
and prior to Word 98, Macintosh versions of Word had product numbers
(1,3,4,5,6) instead of year numbers. Do you actually mean Word v.6? I do
remember reading about that one, since so many people seem to agree that
Word 5.1 was the best Word ever released, and v.6 the exact opposite of
that.

It is no longer possible to upgrade Word 6 (equivalent more-or-less to Word
95) or Office 4.x (which contained Word 6) to Office 2001, as it was years
ago when you did it, Phillip.

In your own case, what you say sounds unlikely: it's just possible that your
copy of Office 2001 was not considered an upgradeable copy to 2004 if you
did not have a full Product Key for it as part of the earlier upgrade. But
nowadays I don't think that's how it works: if you have any bona fide copy
of Office 98, 2001, or X - even one you got as the result of a previous
upgrade - it can be used with a 2001 Upgrade Product Key.

Yes, Michel: I'll never forget it -- even though we'd find it basic
nowadays -- and not just because it was so solid: because it had a new thing
called *styles*!!

A bloke at my user group meeting in 1989 told me about styles in Word 4 and
what they were. I went home and discovered them, and was *never* the same
again! ;-)
... so many people seem to agree that
Word 5.1 was the best Word ever released, and v.6 the exact opposite of

Well, that's about right too, Michel. It was not a happy time in Microsoft's
history. Though I have to say the continual improvement since then has taken
us far...

your correct it was 6.0.1a Word and Excel 5.0.1a (Where I got the Word
95 from was, when you opened Word 95 on a PC and Word 6.x on a Mac and
covered up all computer identifications The programs looked identical.
The version of Office was 4.2.a for Mac which packaged
Word/Excel/PowerPoint in same package.

I found for Word 6 actually to be the best. It had some features that
are no longer in Word, and miss now.

one being show reveal codes (click on paragraph mark in menu bar) the
double click on the little black boxes next to a paragraph go to any
other paragraph in document and the style of of original paragraph is
bestowed on the new Paragraph.

Yes I have the product keys to all I have upgraded to I have original
floppies for 6.x word/Excel 5.x, Office2001, and Office2004 I've always
called given original serial numbers I had to buy office2001 because I
had the individual products word excel which cost more than office I had
to pay full price for the office2001. I did get 2004 at upgrade product.
I provided all serial numbers each time. (Even the two individual
serial numbers for Excel 5.0.1a, and Word 6.0.1.a.

In any event I guess I'll upgrade to 2008 whether I have to buy at full
price or not.
