Upgrading from Office XP

I have just upgraded to Office '03 from Office XP. I had Office XP with Publisher on my machine; so when installing Office 2003 i choose the 'Upgrade' options as i did not want to loose my instalation of Publisher... Office 2003 is installed now and i still have Publisher installed
The thing is that i went to the 'Add or Remove Programs' applet and i saw that choice to remove Office XP (4oo+ Mb) and tp remove also Office 2003 (500+ Mb)
Why is there two instalations of Office on my computer

N.B. After installing Office 2003 i choose the option to keep backup files for whatever reason it said.

When you upgraded, Office '03 left the files for Publisher and any other Office XP programs that you did not upgrade via Office 2003. As well, your setup files for XP still show
Some machines we use have programs from Office 2000, XP and 2003 (Different upgrade paths). All work well together because we still have all the relevant files for upgrades, updates, etc...
