Office 97 should be able to read Office 2000 and up files. All you miss are
the optional formatting available with later versions.

As for a free method to view files, get the Office File viewers. They will
let you view files created in Office programs but as read-only.

If you want to be able to read/write later versions of Office files, you
will need to purchase the software. TANSTAAFL.
