Upgrading Office test drive to Full version - will I lose data?

J

John

New Macbook, trying Test Drive.

I've read I need to uninstall Test drive before upgrading to the full
version.

Does this mean I will lose any data I've entered in the Test Drive version?

What precautions/backups should I take before upgrading?

Thanks, in ignorance!!

You are correct in that you will need to uninstall the test drive before
installing the full retail version. However, all documents you have created
with any of the office apps, including all your email will be untouched and
available after you upgrade.

If you use the Remove Office application inside your Test Drive folder, your
data will not be touched. The removal tool only removes the Office
applications and any related preference files; it does *not* delete your
documents or your Entourage data. When you install your full version of
Microsoft Office, run Microsoft AutoUpdate (in your Applications folder) a
couple of times to make sure the individual applications are up-to-date.
After you've done that, you can launch Entourage and pick up where you left
off.

Basically speaking, there is no need for a backup in this specific case;
however, it can never be wrong to perform a backup, so follow the advice
mentioned on this page:

Hey I have a question related to this. I have an full installation on
my current macbook, but it seems that I will need to restore my whole
system loosing all the data and applications that I have installed so
far, including this Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac installation. I
still have the installation key, but I don't have the CD that I need
to do so. Is there any way I can install a Full Installation without
the CD, is there like a setup I can download. Thank you very much!

No
But I can't imagine anything other than a completely fried disk that
requires you to lose everything.
Target disk mode?
Boot from CD?

You can do a drag and drop to anther drive and use this as your copy. Unless
you also drag over your preferences file you would need the CD key when you
open Office for the first time.

I suggest using one of the cloning backup applications like SuperDuper! To
clone your drive.

Just a fan of SuperDuper!
