Upgrading One Note 2003 to 2007: Installing issues

D

DanL

I have installed One Note 2007 over my One Note 2003. This install has now
not only wiped out my One Note 2003 application, but now is causing me the
following problems:
1. At boot up every time, I get a dialogue box indicating "Preparing to
install", then “configuringâ€
2. Upon starting Outlook or One Note, I get the same Windows installer
dialogue box.
In all three cases, It will try to install and configure 3 (!!) times EACH,
then the app will properly load, however, there is no One Note button in
Outlook added. I also received this error:

“The add-in Outlook Connector extensions (msncon32.dll) cannot be loaded and
has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the mfr for update. If no update
is available, please uninstall the add-inâ€.

Of course when I do that I lose the feed from Microsoft Live to my Outlook
inbox.
So far, I have:
• run Office's 'detect and repair'
• disable all Outlook add-ins
• Uninstalled Outlook Connector
I find myself going down the tunnel. To summarize, I get continual Windows
installer dialogues upon starting:
• My computer (Vista)
• Outlook 2007
• One Note 2007
After 3-4 attempts, I cancel them and the apps load just fine, but the
delays are interminable and really shouldn’t happen and I do not get the One
Note button in my Outlook.
Can anyone help me at all?

Are there any errors logged in the Event Viewer?
How much free disk space do you have?

D

DanL

David, I really appreciate your help.
1. I didn't know I had an event logger (I am clearly not technical). A
search found I do have one, but one with many directories. Would you point me
to a specific folder and I'd be delighted to report on what it contains?
2. 54GB

D

David Olsen

Check for errors and warnings in Application and System. There might also
be a folder for Office products.
Leave the event viewer open and start using OneNote and Outlook per your
previous description. Look for warnings and errors close to the date/time
of this usage.

David:
OK. I did as you suggest, however, i'm now getting in way over my head, as I
have no idea on how to interpret all the data the warnings and errors show,
of which there are several

BOTTOM LINE: Anyone want to buy my One Note 2007??? I'm staying with 2003
and really appreciate all your help, David!!

It seems that you did not yet run "Repair" from the lost if installed
software (Control Panel | Add or remove Software).
Try the repair for both Outlook and OneNote.
Should this not help uninstall and the re-install both.

The latter would really be the *WORST* thing you might do.
ON2007 has become a really fantastic instrument and after once being
acquainted with it the previous version appears to be a crippled version
if the "real thing" which does nt even an idea what a full product might
be.

Rainald:
Thank you for your inputs! I heartedly agree with the much improved 2007
version and would love to get it going properly, but I simply cannot! I have
invested about 12 hours of time in this installation so far and have, in
fact, performed the repair and the re-install actions at least 3 times now.

Frustration is not the right word to describe my state, as the program
really is nice, but the repeating and very intolerable 'installing' screens
whenever I:
1. Boot up
2. Start Outlook
3 or start One Note 2007

Thank heavens for my iso backup, which enables me to return to the One Note
2003 setup. These negatives far offset the benefits of the improvements,
which are many.

If you have any further thoughts on some solid means to fix this, I would
appreciate them. This just occured to me and might be a clue: I also cannot
install Visio 2003 or Project 2003 although Office Professional 2007 SP2 runs
perfectly. Neither the Visio or the Project forums were able to help with
Visio or Project, BTW, when I spent inumerable hours last year trying to get
them up. One would think Microsoft products are 100% compatable??

Why not post the errors and warnings here?
Without knowledge of what other problems your system is experiencing we may
be on a path of futility. Some of these events may be material to your
overall difficulty with installing other software etc.
Even the most basic diagnosis of the facts presented would suggest it is
premature to blame OneNote - given that there is other software you cannot
even install.

OK, David, here's one selection. I have to say it's all Greek to me.

I hope it means something to you?

Boy, you're good!! My ISP is Comcast and they use McAfee, that apparently
screens everything before it gets to my modem, or at least that's my
understanding. I do not have any others on my PC, I think!! On my system, I
have Advanced System Care, Advanced System Optimizer and Bit Defender.

You are giving me hope! Can you direct this old idiot to a solution?

D

David Olsen

I assume ComCast have spam and AV filtering on your email.

So the AVs resident on your PC is Advanced System Care & Bit Defender. I am
not familiar with these packages, but suggest the following is worth trying.

1. Have a copy of Advanced System Care & OneNote available
2. Disconnect your PC from the internet (simplest method may be to simply
unplug your modem)
3. Uninstall Advanced System Care
4. Uninstall OneNote
5. Reboot PC
6. Install OneNote
7. Reboot PC
8. Confirm OneNote is operating correctly

If not, repeat the process by removing Bit Defender.
If still not, repeat the process by removing Advanced System Optimizer

At this stage, regardless of results, you will need to:

9. Reinstall Bit Defender/ASO/ASC
10. Reboot PC
11. Reconnect the modem
12. Post back with success/failure

I have real concerns with the potential problems that can result in having
both ASC and Bit Defender installed. Generally speaking, when you have two
anti virus packages installed they will fight and cause problems because
both behave in a way that makes them appear suspicious to the other. You
might well find that all of your current problems disappear if you stick
with just one AV package.

David:
I will do as you suggest and will report back here when completed. Thanks
for sticking with me during this lengthy ordeal and for your expert counsel!

Give me a day or two, as I will do backups before each change.

Thanks for your reply, Dan.

I'm pretty sure that the problem can be solved.

Did you try a Repair for Outlook and OneNote as I had suggested?

Rainald
P.S. Which OS are you running?

D

DanL

Rainald:
Yes, I did do the repair ... 3 times as a matter of fact, without result. I
am running Vista Home Premium SP2.

I hope you're right on solving this one, I will next try David's suggestions
below and report back on them. I appreciate your interest and help very much

David and Rainald:
This hole gets deeper and deeper! As I was trying to do a backup before
running all David's suggestions, my Microsoft Auto Update showed a need for
updates. i then stopped the backup and did the download on the updates. That
update stopped near completion and gave me a "Network error ..... Looks like
another program is preventing the installer from working. nr:080070643"

I had already closed down Windows defender and all uneeded start up programs
in the tray, not to mention disabling all Oulook Add-ins.

It looks like there is some app trying to install????????

Does this error give you any further clues to my One Note problem, not to
mention Visio and Project installs?

I'm sorry, I have no idea on what that might be.
Which type of update was it?

This would be consistent with the fact that two anti-virus packages are
running on your PC. However, I would not recommend uninstalling them while
you are connected to the internet.

Please post the full text of the Microsoft Update error message.

Gentlemen:
EUREKA!!! After an inestment of about 18 hours of Backups, uninstalls,
reinstalls, restores and countless boots, ON2007 is up and Outlook is not
plagued with the redundant (20-25 times each run)
"Install/gathering/configuring" messages.

THE VILLIAN was Microsoft's Live outlook Connector (forwards email from my
Live account to my Outlook). Once I uninstalled that, all finally configured
correctly. Of course, I lose the forward feature, but that's OK.

Now, the only remaining problem is that I don't have a One Note button in my
Outllook bar. Any ideas there?

FINALLY, THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH for hanging in there during these agonizing
hours of configuration!!! I almost gave up at 4 different points, but you
both gave me the kick in the slats I needed.

Thank you, Men!!!
