Upgrading question

David

I have an OEM version of Office 97 on my old PC (and a new PC coming).

If I buy an upgrade to Office 2000:

1. Will I be able to install it on my old PC (with the previous OEM version
on)? I think this should be OK, please can someone confirm that.

2. Will I then be able to transfer the Office 2000 to my new PC?

Note that there is no intention to defraud here - I will then remove it from
my old PC, which will be scrapped. The reason I am considering this route
is I know that I cannot transfer my old OEM version to a new computer, but
should be able to upgrade it in situ. But if that is OK, will there be an
issue with transferring the Office 2000?

Thanks in advance

David

Hi, David.

Yes, you can upgrade over the OEM version on its existing installation on
the old machine.

However, as you rightly point out, you cannot transfer the OEM version to
the new PC. You will therefore not be able to install an upgrade as it will
seek verification of a previous installation - which you will not have.

Good luck,

Ed

You can't "transfer" software from one PC to another.

Hello David,

Thank you for your question.

You can install the upgrade version of Office 2000 on another machine using
the Office 97 CD as the instructions below will show.

To resolve this behavior:
1. Run Office 2000 Setup.
2. In the "User Information" dialog box, type your product key in the
"Product Key" boxes, and then click "OK".
3. In the "Product Compliance Check CD Key" dialog box, click "OK".
4. In the "Product Compliance Check" dialog box, in the "Drive" list,
click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive that contains the Office 2000 CD.
5. Remove the Office 2000 CD from the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, and
then insert Office 97 CD1.
6. Wait approximately 30 seconds to permit the computer's CD-ROM drive
to recognize the CD that you inserted.
7. In the "Product Compliance Check" dialog box, click "OK".
8. When the Microsoft Office 2000 End-User License Agreement (EULA)
appears, remove the CD for the previous version of Office from the
computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then insert the Office 2000 CD.
9. Click to select the "I accept the terms of the License Agreement"
check box after you read the End-User License Agreement (EULA), and
then click "Next".
10. Follow the instructions that are displayed on the screen to install
Office 2000.

I hope this helps.
