Upgrading to 2003 from Outlook 2000

Upgrading using SMS, when the user opens Outlook 2003 for
the first time (from Outlook 2000) Outlook migrates the
user's profile and then hangs before it's finished. It
doesn't just hang for awhile but rather until the task is
ended. The computers are Windows 2000 sp3 and Windows XP
pro sp 1.

Any of you had this happen and have a solution?

I haven't done this particular upgrade recently but it sounds as though the
program settings are being migrated so it looks like there is no need for
first run but there is no mail profile available and Outlook hangs. You can
check that by looking for the Outlook Firstrun key in the registry -
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\Setup\FirstRun tells Outlook that
it's a new installation that requires a mail profile. If you don't have that
key, or if its data value is set to "0", Outlook will look for an existing
mail profile and hang if it doesn't find it.

The Office Profile Wizard for Office 2000 does not include the Outlook mail
profile(s). http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=816003 lists the settings
that are saved by that tool -- which do not include the registry values for
the Windows Messaging Profiles.

When migrating from OL2000 you will either need to manually configure the mail
profiles at the workstation before opening Outlook or deploy a PRF file. The
Office Resource Kit includes a detailed document about using PRF files. See
http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2003/journ/PRFwhitepaperintro.htm
