Upgrading to Office 2003

Emerald Saint

I have Office 97 on this PC. The software was on here when I bought the
PC - used. The PC came with a burned copy of the installation CD for the
Office 97. I want to get Office 2003 - either stand alone or an upgrade
version. I looked on ebay and there is a NEW copy of Office 2003 Upgrade
version for sale. There is a note there about Office 2003 Upgrade that
says:

THE SOFTWARE WILL SEARCH THE HARD DRIVE AND WILL INSTALL ONLY IF A LICENSED
VERSION OF OFFICE 97, OFFICE XP, or OFFICE 2000 IS ALREADY INSTALLED.

I don't know what problems I might have if the Office 97 that's already on
my PC isn't properly licensed. I don't really know what that means. Maybe
I won't be able to use the software after I buy it. Does anybody here know
what problems I might have because of the Office 97 that's on my PC already
?

ANOTHER QUESTION: Could it be that the Upgrade I purchase was already
ACTIVATED on a different PC ? Is Office 2003 one of those that you have to
activate on only one PC and won't work on another PC ?

TIA. Bill S.

Buyer beware! A recent study of software sold on auction
web sites, such as eBay, revealed over 50% was actually
counterfeit. You should consider purchasing Microsoft
Office locally at a store you trust and can actually deal with
if you have any authenticity issues.

Also, software on a "burned CD" is often illegal, non-genuine
and therefore worthless!
