Upgrading Word or Office

I have been using Office 97 in XP Home and am quite happy with it.

Are there significant advantages to make it worthwhile upgrading to Office
XP or whatever the latest version is?

From 97, yes. A lot more functionality in all modules. If you'd said Office
2000, then the question is rather more debatable!

And note that Office 2003 will be release for retail sale any day now, so
you might as well wait for that version (though you might find Office XP at
a bargain price right now).

Also note if you purchase Office 2003 has a Technology Guarantee so if
you can find a cheap copy of Office XP you can get Office 2003 for the
cost of shipping if you qualify:
