Upload Excel DIF file to AS400

I am using an excel file saved in DIF format to upload a file to an
AS400 system. Everything uploads just fine except for the last column,
which is a text column with a value of "R" for a reversing entry. I
have tried TtoC to make sure it is a text value, to no avail. Can
anyone think of what the problem may be? TIA
