Urgent! - Access to user data for .pst files

R

Rich Stone

After my laptop crashed and took half of the Windows XP with it, I had to do
a reinstall. In order to preserve the remainder of my exisiting files, I did
the new XP install in a seperate partition.

I want to retrieve the pst files from my old installation but I cannot get
access to my old application data, even though I have used the same user
name. It has created a new folder alongside the old one. I have taken off the
read only tag for the whole folder buy access is still denied.

I need to run the system recovery disc but that will wipe the whole
partition, taking my important emails and contacts with it. Can anyone help?

Right-click the folder, select Properties. Click the security tab.
Windows should prompt you to take ownership, say yes. That should give
you access again.

patrick, It didn't work... It's telling me I do have permission already. I
have also noticed that if I try to uncheck the read only tab for all
subfolders, etc. I get the access denied error again. Also, when the cursor
hovers over the folder, a tab appears stating the folder is empty!

Any more ideas?

In the security tab, add your user to it. Then select full control for
your user. Click advanced and select "replace permission...".
If you get an error message when you try to add your user, click
Advanced and Deselect "Inherit..". Then select "replace..". Click OK.
Then add your user with full control

Thanks Patrick, that worked... I got the same problem on the next level
(local settings folder) even though I asked for persmissions to be applied to
sub folders, but found out how to force permissions. Would never have done it
without you help!
