Urgent!! Organisation Chart synchronisation Unreliable

V

In Visio 2003, I've created a very large organisation
chart and after synchronising and distributing it on
different pages. It seems very unreliable, as the first
manager updates are changed in every single page, but
subsequent updates on the subordinates don't show at all
on the following pages. Was wondering if someone knows why?
Also how should we go about inserting a background picture
in every single page, something like a letterhead?
thanks alot

What sort of updates are unreliable? Are you just changing names, titles,
etc. or are you changing reporting relationships?
Were all the subordinate shapes on the other pages created using Create
Synchronized Copy?

The Organization Chart solution uses an internal data model to keep track of
positions and to synchronize multiple views of the same position. A new
*position* is created when you drag a shape onto the drawing. A new *view*
of a position is created when you invoke Create Synchronized Copy.

You can view the internal data model in your organization chart by doing the
following:
Close Visio
Start->Run->regedit
Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Visio\Solutions\Organization
Chart
Add a new key "Treeview" under the above key
Restart Visio

When you open your Org Chart, you will see a floating window labeled
"Outline Window". This is a tree view of the internal data model of your org
chart. If your model is correct, you should see only one entry for each
position that is synchronized. All views of this entry will be kept in
synch. If there is more than one entry for a position (person) then they are
considered to be different positions and will not be synchronized.

Hope this helps.

I have a an organisation chart which is really big. and
yes i did use create synchronise copy. The changes im
making to test it are just text and font color, size etc.
it seems that the first row or more clearly the first row
of subordinates of the main heading are woring fine. their
changes are updated throughout. but the subsequent
subordinates are not being updated when i make changes and
that just nullifies the whole point of me making a chart
in visio as that was the main reason that i was using
visio. though what you have said is helpful and i will
look into to it that there is only one of each in the
layout. thanking you
Vivek

ok i think there is something wrong. when i went
to 'regedit' to into office and visio and so on.. inside
visio there is an option for solution. but after that.
there is no option for organisation charts, which i think
is really weird. Can you help plzzz.. i have a deadline
coming up.
Thank you so much

The only properties that are synchronized are custom properties and the
reporting relationships. Shape and text formatting is *not* propagated to
the other views of a position (this is by design). The lines of text in a
shape are, by default, associated with custom properties and are therefore
synchronized between views. You can control the association between the
custom properties and shape text using the OrganizationChart->Options dialog
(look under the Fields tab).

It is possible to add text to a shape that is *not* associated with a custom
property. For example, if you have two properties associated with the center
text block and type three lines of text into the shape, the first two lines
will be associated with the two custom properties respectively but the third
line will not be associated and thus will not be synchronized. This may
explain some of what you are seeing.

The bottom line is: any information that you want synchronized *must* be
stored in custom properties.

Are you sure that you are looking at the correct entry? You must look in the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive (*not* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE). If you are in the correct
place it should be there. If not, you can add the "Organization Chart" key
yourself with no ill effects.

Mike,
Thanks alot of this help. the outline window is now
visible.I actually found the correct way of doing it just
after i posted my help message here. You guessed right.I
was looking in the wrong hive. Now that the outline window
is visible.I am actually creating the whole chart again
making sure that duplicates or just single options dont
arise. this time it's going better. Thanks alot for your
help.
Vivek.
