URL Link - "word is preparing to load this document"

Word 2003 SP2

When I click on a link within a DOC file, the status says
"word is preparing to load this document"
However, Word takes over a minute to bringup the link into a brower.
During that time the system acts like it freezes.

Any feedback is appreciated.
