I need a Straight and to the point answer to a question posed on Adobe
Acrobat Newsgroup and it repeatedly comes up.

Say you create a document in Word2004 That have some URL/Mailto links.

And say you create the same identical document in the equivent word
Application.

Okay you convert these documents to PDF's

If you veiw the pdf's in the word document all the links are intact,
working are colored blue and underlined in the version using PC Word and
PC Acrobat.

But the version that was create with Mac Word and Mac ACrobat, all the
links are lost and all the text is black with no underlines.

The actual links say http://www.gohome.com are there they are just not
links.

I want an honest answer no fudging , no humming , no hawing.

Who has the problem Mac Office or Mac Acrobat?

And if its Office explain why?

I do it one of two methods. The first takes longer.

First method.

after document is created go to > Prin Menu.

When print window comes up choose the AdobePDF 7 Print Driver and
printer of choice (leave the Page setup alone)

Setup rest of the menu choices as desired. only one or two are actually
changed if need. One choice you have it to open Acroabt or Reader to
view as soon as created. And the other you can choose the dpi at which
the printer prints default is 1200dpi. (actually sets the size of the
Graphics within the PDF).

Then click save.

when save window comes up name file, and choose location to save

The conversion is a two step process. first the driver creates a
Postcript file. The distiller in the back ground converts the .ps file
to a PDF file.

In the second method which is much faster.

Go to print menu and in list of options (click the copies and pages
button) choose Print options.

click on check box. Then click on button that says pdf and change to
Postscript.

Save postscript file to desired location.

Now either open Acrobat and open the .ps file (or drop file on
Distiller). THe file is then converted (by Distiller) to a PDF which you
save.

The exact same technique is used reagardless if Using a PC or Mac
(except the ability to drag and Drop I am unsure if PC's are capable of
such.)

In PDF's created in Acrobat 7 PC the links remain active, are colored
blue, and underlined.

On the Mac PDF's they are not and you must first select the desired text
(in Acrobat 7), choose properties, turn text color Blue, then draw a
line underneath, go to properties and change color to blue and set
weight to 1.5).

THEN....... either use link tool and create a bounding box and create
link, or .......... choose from Advanced Menu > create Links.

Then the link becomes active.

The folks at Adobe say Microsoft deliberately left out the proper
"Hooks" in the code in the Mac version.

(Some says it was done on purpose as an additional incentive to drive
people away from the Mac Platform. Others dont say that but say they
just left some code out whether intentional or no.

It seems to be working as the person that originated the thread is
considering dumping is brand new Mac powerBook and go get a new PC just
to be able to do this.)

Frankly this erks me no end because I have to spend an extra 10 minutes
to an hour or two fixing links in my PDF's on our Association website
because of this. Sometimes I wonder if my years of acid reflux would go
away if I had gone to the Darkside years ago. :-(

This function will only create links from a link that appears full text
in the PDF: eg: http://www.apple.com/ or mailto:[email protected] but not
Apple (corresponding to link) or (e-mail address removed) (the mailto: is missing).

That's because this function only scans the text looking for something
looking like a link.

In the Windows version, the Acrobat plug-in is WAY more advanced. It
takes a while to generate the PDF, but at least it intensively works
with Word to detect document structure (using styles) to generate a
proper document structure in the PDF and scans all links (even if the
link does not appear full text in the document) to properly embed them
in the final PDF.

The current acrobat plug-in for Word on MacOS X is a JOKE. It's
completely useless (if not a trouble-maker). It's one of the first thing
I trashed after installing Acrobat.

I second that! I use windows Acrobat on a daily basis and its custom
"PDFMaker" creates PDFs with ability for all URLs, cross document links,
etc. to be active links once converted. It can use either headings and/or
styles.

I believe it is written in visual basic, but probably not easily ported to
the Mac version. Grrrrr. I even find myself having to do my final work in
the PC version for this reason.

That's also my impression. They must be using VBA functions not
supported on the Mac version :-(

Same thing here :-(

The links are written as:

or mailto:[email protected]
