Usable memory in Excel

I seem to remember reading somewhere that there is a limit to the amount of
memory that Excel can use, even if you have much more RAM available is the
computer.

For example, if your computer has 512 mb of RAM, an Excel workbook might be
able to use only 50 mb (or whatever) of it.

I can't seem to find anything to confirm or refute this. Can anyone help.

I am using Excel 2003 on a Windows XP machine.

As you will see, memory constraints were a much bigger issue before Excel
2003.

Many thanks for your info.

Many years ago I had a big Excel 97 workbook that kept growing until one day
it locked up my machine. After being told about the memory limits I split
it up into 2 workbooks. Wasn't as efficient but at least it works. Now
that I've got Excel 2003 I can again go back to building huge spreadsheets
<g>.
