Use FILL function in a layer.

How do you use the FILL function in a layer? I have not been able to use a
SOLID FILL in an assigned layer. I have been sucessful in using a patterned
fill in a layer, but when I try to use a solid fill it does not fill the
shape.

are you attempting to fill a single object or a group?
is the object assigned to multiple layers simulataneously?
