Use .NET controls in Access 2003?

I'm trying to add a mapping component to a vertical app I've developed, and
am finding that ActiveX controls which I'm told worked in 97 do not work in
2003. Mapping software vendors tell me that they're phasing out support for
ActiveX controls in favor of .NET controls. Can 2003 handle .NET controls?
Or alternatively, why are older ActiveX controls not working in 2003? (It
won't recognize their methods and properties.)
