use of Data1 field

Can you tell how Data1 field is used under Format, Special options in Visio.
I am trying to link milestone data held in Excel with a Visio (time line)
view I have. Is there a way of linking the data in Excel to Visio so that the
timeline is automatically updated when the milestone data changes?

I do not think that the Timeline template uses Data1. You can access the
value of these fields by using VBA
ShpObj.Data1 = "Some text"

In my experience most of the work done in the timeline addin is accomplished
with user and custom properties. Some of these are buried inside of the group
shape in the subshapes.
