If you have Office Pro and not the Home and Student version, you have
already violated the EULA for that software. That version (Pro) normally
allows installation on a desktop and portable device. The H & S version
does allow 3 installations.
Pro retail license agreement "a. Licensed Device. You may install and use
one copy of the software on the licensed device. b. Portable Device. You
may install another copy on a portable device for use by the single primary
user of the licensed device." the OEM version's "The software license is
permanently assigned to the device with which you acquired the software.
That device is the "licensed device." A hardware partition or blade is
considered to be a separate device. a. Licensed Device. You may install
and use one copy of the software on the licensed device."
The H & S agreement is "a. Licensed Device. You may install one copy of the
software on three licensed devices in your household for use by people who
reside there. The software is not licensed for use in any commercial,
non-profit, or revenue-generating business activities."
If you are not in violation, what was the exact wording on the "was not
allowed" error message you received. Office can always be installed on the
same machine. Since you had a crash of a "drive" you may not have installed
all the operating system service packs, drivers, etc. that are required for
Office '07 to install. At the minimum the XP operating system must be
patched to SP 2 for an install to succeed. I'm guessing here but I have to
assume that the system wasn't updated enough for O '07 to install.
