Use of OTF fonts in Word X

Keith Parr

Hello

I am in the process of moving myself from OS 9.2.2 to OSX and Word 2001
to Word X (SR1).

In Word 2001 I was using an Adobe postscript font - Janson - moving to
OSX / Word X I have also tried OTF versions of the font. I am using
Suitcase to manage my fonts, it has the OTF fonts enabled.

In the "style" windows and in the font menu I still see Janson Text as
the font name while the OTF font is Janson Roman. Further, there is a
B Janson, an I Janson, and a BI Janson but not, as with the OSF
variants, Janson Bold, Janson Italic, Janson Bold Italic. The
numbering for bold, italic etc faces of Janson Roman which I can see in
Suitcase is nowhere to be found in the Word menus.

I have trashed the Word font cache with no change. I have searched the
MS and Adobe web sites for help without success.

I think I remember reading once (in the dim and distant past when I was
planning my migration to the X world) that Word did not support OTF
seamlessly but I cannot find it anywhere.

Can anyone tell me please whether what I am seeing is "correct" or
should I be able to see / use Janson Bold and Janson Roman (for
example) in the Word font menus?

And or can anyone point me at the (or even a) reference about the use
of OTF in Word?

Thanks

Keith

Hi Keith:

Word doesn't properly support either Unicode or OTF.

To get OTF fonts to work, you may have to take them out of their suitcase.

You can't get Unicode to work in Word X.

Cheers

Thank you John, although clearly that was not the answer I wanted to
hear!

It explains wy the MS site was silent on the issue too!

Do you know if there are any plans, thoughts, dreams ... to support
them sometime or should I just delete the otf versions for good?

Thanks

Keith
