Use of Port 90 for a WSS site when WSS is used with project server 2003?

Engelbert

We are having problems with accessing a WSS site from the Project Server
server.

I've seen that the WSS site has not been set up on the default site (which
as far as I can see the Microsoft Project Server installation guide says to
do) but has been set up on port 90.

You can access the default site (showing the standard not yet configured
screen) but you can't access :90. You can access the (WSS) configuration
port.

The project server guy says port 90 is recommended for the WSS DB when used
with Project Server 2003.

Is it ?

Hello Engelbert,

Port 90 is unusual for sharepoint. I would use a different ip address
and host headers to meet both requirements: seperate virtual web server
for projectserver and sharepoint services.

Hi Engelbert,

If you don't use host header names, then the port can be any port number
as long as it's not shared with another web site on the same server.

For example, if you have a WSS web site and PWA web site on the same
server, then you cannot use the same port number. One would probably be
on the default port 80 and another needs to be on a different port, say
port 81 or 90 (or any port number)

However, if the WSS web site and PWA web site are on different servers,
then there is no conflict using the same port number

Cheers,

Can I ask you a follow-up, Rolly.

This is a two server setup with Project Server and WSS on one and SQL Server
2K SP4 for the databases on the other.

I've looked at the web sites on the SQL Server server and there is a default
site (port 80 of course) that hasn't been extended; a "WSSDB" site on port
90 (which now can't be accessed - but ignore that) and a configuration site
(port nnnn) which works.

I don't understand how this has ever worked without the default site being
assigned to WSS and extended. If that had happened I could assume that port
90 was the Project server site (despite the name) and be fairly happy.

(As before, I'm coming this from WSS and for me the installation of WSS in
the Project Server documentation is clear - you create it on the default
site and extend it.)

(hoping "extend it" is the right terminology - I'm on the wrong machine to
look)

I've looked at the web sites on the SQL Server server

make that

"I've looked at the web sites listed on the *Project Server* server."

Sorry about that!

Hello Engelbert,

there is no need to use the default site. The default site can also be
removed if it does disturb you (if it is not used for ohter things).

To make things clear: Use port 80 for both, project server and wss site
if they are on two different machines. If they where on the same
machines i would use two different ip addresses on the same server for
projectserver and wss. Any other possibility can have draw backs.
