Use of the Web address field in Outlook to convert paths

Since Outlook no longer supports url's or shortcuts I need to find an easy
way to convert file paths to internet paths (where the spaces that usually
breaks any link is replaced by %20 etc). By the use of copy (a file path from
explorer) and paste I am sometimes able to do this by using the address field
in the web toolbar in Outlook (copy/paste/enter or tab opens up the folder or
document AND converts the original path in Outlook to an internet path), but
not always. Why? How do I proceed to succede every time I try?
