Use RFID ID Badges for Password Replacement or Two-Factor Authentication

Is it possible to use an RFID ID Badge as an alternative to a password or as a method for two-factor authentication? If so, would purchasing an RFID Smart Card Reader work? Also, are there any important considerations to keep in mind when implementing this?
