'Use Word 2003 to edit e-mails' button is greyed out... why?

I'm using Office 2003 and the option in Outlook to 'Use Microsoft Office Word
2003 to edit e-mails' is greyed out and won't let me select it.

Can you tell me why?

Just to be sure, you did install Word 2003 when you installed Office,
correct? Yes, I realize it's a stupid question but some users decide to only
update parts of the Office suite leading to issues.

I'm in a small office (as in a real office, not a piece of software) and
several computers have the same problem. As far as I'm aware they would have
installed everything at the same time, or the whole lot might have come
pre-installed.

If that was the issue, what would I need to do?

Run a repair on Office on one of the machines and see if it cures
anything...
