User and Group Permissions

D

Dave Harris

I am having problems with setting up user and group level permissions in an Access db. I went through the wizard everything went well until anyone else tries to access the db. When they attempt to, they get a message stating that they do not have permission, in other words they are considered to be in the “Users†group, or unregistered, ( I didn’t give unregistered users any permissions). I set up accounts for all of them using their login that they use to access our network. The username that I was assigned by Access to access the db was my network username and I do not have any problems getting in

If anyone could give me an idea as to what I am doing wrong, I would greatly appreciate it

Thank you for your assistance

Hi Dave,

It sounds as though security is working. They are likely trying to open it
via a double-click in Windows Explorer. They are using their default
system.mdw on their machine rather than the workgroup created for your
secure mdb. This is good, they shouldn't be able to open it using the
system.mdw.

You need to give them access to the secure workgroup file. If you look at
the properties of the destop shortcut created for your mdb, you'll see the
path to the secure mdw included in the target. Copy this file to a folder
on the network that everyone has access to. Modify your shortcut to point
to the new location.

You can leave all your users joined to the system.mdw on their machines, and
give them a shortcut like the one you have (you should be able to just copy
it to them).

All sessions of Access will use their default system.mdw (no login), but for
your secure mdb, they'll launch it using the shortcut, which will point to
the secure mdw to use for that session.
