User can't save file (locked for editing)

Users intermittently get the message "file locked for editing" when they are
trying to save a document, when only they have the file open. Files either
located on network home areas or shared areas & in all instances users have
read & write access.
We have recently moved to using office 2007, but the errors occur with both
2003 & 2007 word formats.
I have read post where this seems to happen when users create documents from
templates, but in most of these cases they have just been created from the
normal template.
A workaround for users is to either delete the owner file ~$word.doc or save
as another file name.

If anyone has any ideas what is causing this problem, I would be really
greatful.

They don't just need read and write permissions: they MUST have full
permissions as Word needs to delete temp files when it has finished with
them.

Previous reports of this have been due to some type of network monitoring
utilities that are not fully compatible with Office 2007. But there are also
some third party add-ins that also cause these error, though they are
usually more consistent. You could try starting Word in Safe Mode and
testing to see if that stops the errors which will prove it is something
outside Word.
