I would like to know how to save a chart as a template and therefore I do not need to edit it over and over again every time I want to use the same style/format.

I saw a topic related to this question (http://www.officeformac.com/ms/ProductForums/Excel/3981), but it was quite hard to follow, especially the first part about "You can create chart template as you can calculation sheet templates".

Could someone help me out?

Thank you.

Hi,

This used to be done in the Chart Wizard but the seem to have pulled that
from the 2008 version, and I think its gone as well, oops Microsoft!!!.

I haven't tried the suggestion you're referring to, but in general: If the
chart is created as a SmartArt Object I'm afraid the answer is No, saving
custom chart styles isn't an option - at least not yet. Perhaps the next
release of Office will provide enhanced capabilities relevant to the new
graphics engine introduced in 2007/2008.

You can, however, still created the charts using the old technology by going
to Insert> Object> MS Graph Chart. Your design can then be added as a Custom
Style and also be specified as the Default.

OK, here's the other way.

Open the file containing your favorite graph. Select its sheet and with
"Move or Copy Sheet" of the Edit menu, make a copy of it in a new workbook.
Switch to this new workbook.

Make necessary changes to your graph to make it universal for your needs.
You may want, for example, to remove the references for the series names,
and replace the data ranges for the X and Y series by single numbers (0, 1
etc.), just to keep them "alive" and formatted as you desire.

Finally, save the the workbook as a template. By selecting this type (xltx)
in the drop-down menu Excel will automatically suggest the following path:
~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Office/User Templates/My models/ (or
about that, I'm translating from the French version).

Now, when you want to reuse your template, the trick is to click on the
Sheets tab above the worksheet, NOT on the Graphs tab. The first category of
the Sheets tab is for your personal ones, and there you'll find your custom
graph.

Hi,

Yes that works but what a pain considering the method we could use in 2004
and for that matter can still use in Excel 2007 on the PC where we have a
collection of custom chart styles we can apply to any chart.
