User Defined Fields in Forms and Views

I add a "user defined field in the folder" under views but it doesn't
appear in the forms as an available field. The same is true if I add
it under forms as it doesn't appear under views. It seems I need to
add the same field twice. Am I doing something wrong?

I understand the fields don't carry across folders, but that seems to
be also true between views and forms unless I'm doing something wrong.

It should appear in the field chooser list. Are you sure you had
selected User Defined Fields in the Folder as the Folder? You should
see it there. You will not see it in the All fields display until you
actually give it a value in the item.

Paul:

I just tried it again. I created a Keyword field. I added a field
through Define Views (user defined fields for this folder) and added
it to the display. Went to design the form for the same folder and
the field was not listed under "user defined fields for this folder"
in the he "Field Chooser" or if I created a new control and tried to
select the new field (Properties / Choose Field). The field was not
listed.

That is a "feature" I didn't know about. When people define fields in
the Item, and later say they need it defined in the folder, we have
always told them to redefine it again, in exactly the same way, but
using the category of UDF defined in the folder.

I am getting the impression that you are creating your Keyword field
using the DefineViews UI. Try the following: open a new item, go into
design mode, create a field using the Category of UDF in the folder.
Then see if that field appears in the field chooser when you try to
bind it to a control. It may be that fields defined in the View do not
propagate to the forms design list.

I just got the following message back from a Microsoft Outlook Expert.
Tell me if you want to open the incident.

***************************
Looks like a bug, and I'm surprised I haven't noticed it before. I
don't recall us changing anything in this area, but we seemed to have
regressed from 2002. In 2003 SP1 (not sure if SP matters), in either
cached or uncached mode, I can add a field to my Inbox via the Field
Chooser. But if I open a new mail message, go into design mode, go to
the All Fields tab, and change it to "User-defined fields in Inbox,"
the field isn't listed. Works fine in 2002.

I'd ask the customer to open a support incident so we can investigate
further, or if you want to stay in the loop, your friendly MVP buddy
can do that for you (and assign the incident to me).
