User does not have access privileges

I made several word documents, and even a notepad document on a
different computer and saved it on an external harddrive. Running WinXP
and Word XP/2003.

Now on my laptop (also running WinXP and Office XP) the filename shows
in green text, and I get the above error message.

I have tried taking ownership of the files on my laptop, and on another
PC to no change.

I no longer have access to the original PC. I am assuming since the
text of the file names is green that it is an NTFS issue, am I wrong?

At any rate HOW do I regain access to these files?
