User permissions

I hope this question is easy - but maybe not so obvious:

I can set User permissions to Open objects - reports and queries, yet not
allow View permission for the same users with the underlying tables. So
queries could be run, but users could not see entire tables. Is this correct?

Then - it would not be possible for Windows network users to link or import
these same tables via ODBC. Or am I just deluding myself?
