Using a condition in a text box to reference itself

Scenario:

I have a text box and a Check Box. I'd like the text box to display
"complete" when someone clicks the Check box.

Why does the formula work when I use rules inside of the properties
menu of the check box, but does not work if I try to program it
directly from the text box?
