Using a drop down outline code?

I setup an outline code for resources skill set as a drop down menu. But If I
clcikc the dropdown it does not show any information I have to go into the
resource information dialog and select it in there. But then I cannot see the
data in the project I can only see the data if I go into the resource
information dialog and look at custom fields and the data is in there. Is
this normal?
