Using a form to search for records

I'm wanting to use a blank form for searching for records. I am new to this
functionality. I do not code in VB so I was wondering if I had any other
options.

The Contact sample database has this ability in it's switchboard (using
filterbyforms) but I'm not sure how to implement.
