Using a list style in another (existing) document

M

Mikkel Z. Herold

Okay, I have been at this for hours, but haven't found the solution to
my problem - I hope someone here has the answer.

I have a number of separate documents, and all of them have diffenrent
heading styles in them. So, in each document there is a Heading 1,
Heading 2, Heading 3 etc.

Now, in one document I have made a new multi-level List Style and
applied this to my headings, and it looks just the way I want it to - my
question is, how can I then apply this new, custom List Style to the
same headings in the other documents?

If I open one of the other documents, my newly created List Style is not
available in the Multi-level list dropdown. However, if I start a new
document, it is there.

So, how do I "import" the new style to already existing documents ...?

TIA

List styles can be transferred through the organizer. Once in the document,
it should show up in the
list styles gallery, and you will be able to apply it to the headings.

Or sometimes it might be more convenient to reverse the process. That is, if
you are trying to copy a certain list format from document A to document B,
you might just as well make a copy of document A and then copy in the
relevant contents from B.

And where do I find the organizer?
Once in the document, it should show up in the

Okay, so I have to apply it manually to all the headings?

I have applied it to the headings in one document, but do I still have
to do it in the others, if they use the same heading style (and name)?

I was thinking that if I could make the List Style a part of the Heading
style, then it would automatically be applied to all text with that
heading style ... or am I misunderstanding something?

And where do I find the organizer?

Well, you didn't say which version of Word you're using, but in 2007,
open the Styles and Formatting panel (Ctrl-Alt-Shift-S), of the three
mysterious buttons at the bottom, click the rightmost ("Manage
Styles"), then in the Manage Styles panel, click the "Import/Export"
button at the bottom left. (I think there are other ways to get to it,
too.)

In 2003, I remember it being fairly easy to find in the Tools menu.

D'oh! It is 2007!

Found it! But I would have to do this for every of my existing
documents, right?

Well, that's changed in 2007 - nothing is easy to find anymore, and the
Help is no help either ...!

Thanks so far,

I fourtunately, have never had to deal with List Styles, but it's not
impossible that there's a way to do it.

I don't think you'll get an argument here on either of those points.
