using autonum 2x's in same document

I have a long document with multipal figures and tables
inserted into it. I am trying to autonum the figures and
tables seperatly, but can not get it to work, it numbers
them both together.

The heading for the figures is called figure heading and
the one for tables is called table heading, but as text
and size are the same.

Is there a way to autonum both types seperatly, cause I
deal with this in most of my documents, and have been
autonum one and just inserting numbers for the other.

thanks,
erin

Hi Erin

The usual way to number figures and tables is to use Word's caption functionality.

Insert > Caption, or in Word 2002, Insert > Reference > Caption.

In the Label box, choose Figure or Table.

Click Numbering to get the numbering format you want.

In the Caption box, type your caption, and click OK.

Note that the caption functionality uses SEQ fields. They don't update automatically. To update one, click on it and press F9. To
update all the fields in the document, ctrl-a then F9. Shift-F9 toggles the field codes for one field; Alt-F9 toggles field-codes
for the whole document.

It can be helpful to see that you're using fields. To do that, choose Tools > Options > View and set Field Shading to "Always".
You'll see fields in grey shading. The shading won't print, but it lets you know that what you're seeing is the result of a field.

Hope this helps.
