Using AutoText in 2007

Hello,

I am trying to add an AutoText entry for a Table of Contents heading. A
colleague uses it in 2003 and it works perfectly without any problems. Here
is what she has sent me:

{TC "TypeTextHere" \| 1 }

She types TC and hits F3 and just replaces the text with what she wants. I
cannot seem to replicate that in Office 2007. I have tried and tried to get
this to work without success. If I type TC and F3, nothing happens. If I
select Insert -> Building Block Organizer and select TC, it puts the field
codes on my page and I replace my text. Howerver, when I try to update the
TOC, the new field code entry does not appear. I have tried so many different
things, I am not even sure anymore if TC is a default building block in
Office 2007 or that is what I created originally.

Can anyone guide me to the correct steps to create this Autotext? I have
created Quick Parts for some legal disclaimers that I use in my work and they
work fine. I hit Insert ->Quick Part and my disclaimers appear in the list
and I insert them in my documents without difficulty. Autotext has me crazy
and I cannot seem to figure out what I am doing wrong.

This AutoText entry would insert a TC field; the AutoText entry that creates
the field would have to be named TC for it to work. And you would have to
have field codes displayed (Alt+F9) to be able to insert the desired text in
the field. There are certainly easier ways to have text included in a TOC,
however.

In order for text from TC fields to appear in the TOC, the TOC field code
must include the \f switch. Are you missing that switch in your TOC field?
(Alt+F9 to toggle field codes so that you can see the TOC field code – it
could look something like { TOC \o "1-3" \f \h \z \u } – here with the \f
switch). Note that the \f switch is added if you turn on the "Table entry
fields" check box in the "Table of Contents Options" dialog box (References
tab > Table of Contents > Insert Table of Contents > Table of Contents tab >
click Options).

Your problem with typing TC and hitting F3:
Your AutoText may be OK. A TC field is formatted as hidden text. Hidden text
is only visible if you have all formatting marks shown (Ctrl+Shift+8 to
toggle formatting marks) or at least have Hidden Text shown. Formatting marks
can be turned on and off individually via Office button > Word Options >
Display group > Hidden Text. Note that Ctrl+Shift+8 toggles the "Show all
formatting marks" option in the group where "Hidden Text" is found. Could it
be that TC + F3 actually inserts your AutoText but that you cannot see it
because hidden text is not displayed?

As Lene points out, TC fields are Hidden text, so they aren't toggled with
Alt+F9 but with Show/Hide ¶ (Ctrl+*). I regret the error.

Hello all,

Thank you very much for your responses. I reviewed all the responses as
well as the website.

To provide some additional background on what I am trying to accomplish, I
use a template for my proposal where the TOC has the first three
heading/subheading levels defined to appear in the TOC. When I have to
insert customer forms, I use a different page layout where I do not want my
standard H1 level style to appear. These are the pages where I am trying to
insert this field code so I can add them to the TOC as a Heading 1 but it
will have the format of the Heading on different page layout.

I tried doing it manuall by typing the text and selected it; selected
Shif+ALT+9 to open the Field Code table. This did put the \f switch in the
field. I am not using Chapters in my documents only Heading 1-3. Is the C
in the Table Identifier for Chapter? If so I need to use something for a
Heading 1. I tried H hoping that might be it, but I get the same result;
nothing appears in the TOC. Is there someplace I can find a definition of the
A-Z Table Idenfiers or perhaps someone knows the correct sequence for this
heading level to appear?
