Using bullets or numbering button crashes Word 2003

G

gingerpeach123

During the last day or two, whenever I use one of the toolbar buttons for
bullets or numbering in Word 2003, the program crashes. After file recovery,
sometimes the buttons work but more often than not, they crash the program
yet again. I tried deleting normal.dot so Word would recreate it, but that
didn't seem to help.

Any ideas what I can try? Thanks!

That is usually a sign that you have a corrupt or incompatible printer
driver. Check that you have the latest printer driver from the support site
for your printer and then delete and reinstall the printer.

If Word crashes each time you use Bullets/Number then you may have a corrupt
key in the Registry. That's where the Bullets/Numbering settings are stored,
not your Normal template. :)

In the Registry drill down to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\List Gallery Presets

and delete the Gallery Presets key.

In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry file
command and export your selected branch. That way if you find the change
wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the deleted branch back to to
the Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.

Thanks, Beth! This worked for me, and my bullets and numbers are back in
business.

One thing I should mention is that when was drilling down to find the
registry key you described, I also found a key related to a printer I had
deleted (per Terry's suggestion in this thread). I exported and then deleted
both keys, so I can't say for sure which did the trick, but as I said, I'm
back in business.

As a relative newbie to registries and keys, I found this Guided Help on the
topic extremely helpful:

Thanks again!

Glad to hear the problem is resolved, Betsy. Thanks for the update. :)

The key for your printer holds information such as the Envelope feed and
options when printing envelopes rather than information about the printer
itself. So if you no longer use that printer then it contained unneeded
information anyway. But if you ever do use the printer you might find you
need to adjust the Envelope options again if you ever previously adjusted
them, which isn't a big deal.

Hi, Beth--

I have the same problem as gingerpeach, but when I look in the List Gallery
Presets folder I don't see anything that looks like Gallery Presets key. All
I see are 8 icons with the following labels:

(default)
Data 1 - Data 6
Picture Bullets

Any suggestions?

It looks like I omitted "List" when referring to the key in my reply. Sorry
about that. Try renaming the List Gallery Presets 'folder', which is
referred to as a 'key' in the Registry. :)

The same issue happened with me, and the Google search took me to this article.

Beth, your solution helped. I removed the key suggested by you and back in
the bullets and numbering business, which I like so much to organize my docs.

Thanks,
-Sachin Kulkarni

I am trying to fix the same problem on my friends computer but when I drill
down to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word
There is no folder or key or anything that is called List or Gallery

Are you sure that your friend is using 2003? Note that if he or she is using
Word 2007, you could try deleting the ListGal.dat file in the user profile
instead.

Yeah I am sure she is using 2003 and it is the small business edition
I unistalled and reinstalled office and the problem went away for a day but
now it is back

After doing further troubleshooting I noticed that word does not crash when
adding bullets if I log in with a different username.

It seems as if the user profile has been damaged. Log in as administrator
and then delete and recreate the profile.

I have been pulling my hair out trying to fix this problem also. I am not
computer savvy so the thought of messing about with registry keys gives me
heart palpitations! I got in touch with a Microsoft computer technician to
went through it step-by-step. First, he got me to open Word in safe mode by
clicking on Start-Run-type in "winword safe"-OK and opened up Word. I then
tried clicking on a numbered bullet and it worked OK. This determined for
him that the problem lay with the registry keys. He then asked me to click
on Start-Run-type in "regedit"-OK. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_USER then go to the
Software folder, then Microsoft, then Office, then 11.0 and rename the Word
folder to Word.old. Then go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then Software, Microsoft,
Office, 11.0 and again rename the Word folder to Word.old. Finally, within
CURRENT_USER go to Software, Microsoft, Office and change the Word folder to
Word.old. You should by now have changed the name of 3 Word folders to
Word.old. If you are anything like me and know how to work a computer but
not how it works this should fix the problem. Good luck and cheers from NZ

Deleting the List Gallery Presets key in the registry usually fixes the
issue you have encountered.

I had the same issue, Google brought me here and the solution that Beth
proposed worked for me as well. Simply acknowledging for other people's sake.

Thanks

Thanks but how do I "Delete the list gallery presets key" you make it sound
so obvious, but I have never needed to that, any hints.

This problem started a few days ago and I think it coincides with my
downloading and installation of the "Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office
System". I will uninstall that and see if it helps; else I will come back for
hints on how to "Delete the list gallery presets key"

P

Pikoton

I uninstalled the "Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System" rebooted
and didn't help. THa problem persists. I had preciously uninstalled and
reinstalled Words 2003, that didn't help either.

Can anybody please help me solve this problem

Well, if something in the user profile is damaged, this would fix it, for a
while. Presumably the user would want "stuff" from the old profile put back,
but not knowing what in the user profile was damaged, how is anybody to know
what might just bring the problem back?
(not to mention the inconvenience to the user of all the other stuff from
the profile having gone west)
