Using Cross-reference with Master/Subdocuments

Greetings all -

I have one large document broken up as a master and
several sub-documents, and want to cross reference to
headings that are in another sub-document. When I
attempt to add the x-ref (from the master document), the
sub-document headings are not visible in the pick list.

Does this capability exist? Any help will be welcome.

"Master Document" is a term of art in Word referring to a "feature" that not
only doesn't work but also destroys documents. The consensus (with the
limited exception of Steve Hudson) among those offering advice on these
newsgroups is that using the Master Document feature is a sure way to
destroy your document. It can destroy parts of your document that you are
not even working on! I think John McGhie said it succinctly when he said
that there are two kinds of Master Documents: Those that are corrupt and

Well I asked for help and I got it, albeit not what I was
expecting. Thanks for the advice, I had no idea the MD
feature in word could be so dangerous. Maybe it's time
to ditch all these graphic programs and go back to good
old 'roff' .

Steve Hudson gets Master Documents to work. The key is following very
precise steps (more than most users have patience for doing). Other
experienced users use it, but _not_ for editing.
