using Fill, series...how set STEP?

win VISTA, Excel 7;
I desire to generate a simple series, starting with a Date. Clkng FILL, (on
Home tab), series, colum, date, day ... cannot get the STEP: to be anything
but 1. What's my oversight?

Excel 7? Really? The same version that was also called Excel 95? I wouldn't
have thought it could run under Vista.

Or do you mean Excel 2007?

As near as I can tell (Excel 2007) you have to now enter the first 2 values
of your series with the desired step between those two and then drag to fill.

It is nice to know the Ribbon is so intuitive to use.<g>

You can still do series fills the "menu" way... click the Home tab on the
Ribbon and in the Editing panel, click the Fill icon (box with a down arrow
in it).

Thanks - looked all over for that. The ribbon may be 'intuitive' but how
many (7? more?) years of using the other inteface seems to have taken the
intuit out of my intuition, plus I didn't even find mention of that method in
2007 Help :-<

Actually, now that you've pointed it out, I think I must have looked right
at it and missed it. Too much info presented to find the unfamiliar easily?

If you right click and drag with the mouse you will get a lot of options
upon releasing the mouse button, one of them is fill series

I tried that (it is covered in Help) but couldn't seem to get it to work
right for me, maybe I wasn't holding my tongue between my teeth at just the
right angle.

But with the number of 2007 questions we're beginning to get here and there,
I suppose I'm going to have to use it more and more. But for now 2003 is
still my primary tool, and the only one in use at my workplace.

You know how to you would left click the little black square in the
bottom-right corner of the selection to drag it for copying down or
extending a series? Well, do the identical thing, but use the right mouse
button instead and a menu of options will pop up after the drag when you
release the right button.

Got it now - have to have initial value in the first cell, plus have to
remember to look to the bottom of the popup for the 'Series' item vs earlier
item 'Fill Series'. I think when I tried last night/this morning, that I was
probably trying starting with an empty cell and expecting to have those
options enabled then - and of course they weren't.
