Using FrontPage 2003 to upload via FTP to a Non-FrontPage site

I have developed and published a number of websites using FrontPage. To
date, all of them have used FrontPage extensions.

Now, I am trying to use FrontPage to create a site that does not use any
FrontPage special features, such as hit counters or forms. I want to use
FrontPage's FTP capability to upload the content to a site that is NOT
FrontPage enabled.

At first, I was not able to upload my new content, but then I checked the
box called "Use Passive FTP" (in "Remote Web Site Properties"), plus I
disabled the McAfee Security Suite on my Dell computer. The upload worked
perfectly, except that after the files were uploaded, there was a pause of 3
or 4 minutes before I got the "Successful Completion" notice.

I repeated the test several times, always with the same results: a pause of
several minutes before the "Successful Completion" notice.

How can I configure FrontPage (or McAfee, or something else) so I do not get
the pause?

How can I configure McAfee so I do not need to completely disable the
firewall to allow FrontPage to upload via FTP?

I'm sorry that you feel you have to use a Security Suite - rather than just
a free FTP Publisher for your needs. - SmartFTP client is one of many that's
free for personal use and is cross platform aware.

The truth of the matter is that Symantec and McAfee Security Suites cause
more problems, cost more end users more money and time, play on peoples
ignorance, fears and insecurities, and damage more O/S's than illegitimate
spam, trojans and inbound hack attacks. I know. That's what I do for a
living. Successfully!

Having said that just make sure that you do have a Virus checker from some
company that attempts to portray themselves as 'respectable'. (We all know
who they are)

First of all, Uninstall all Internet Security Suites on Home Computers. Use
the Windows Firewall in XP and make sure you have JUST an Anti-Virus
Checker.

For anyone on Cable Broadband (shudder!) rather than DSL - make sure you are
sitting behind a Firewall - Linksys is good enough - and that the IP address
of your Home Computer and/or Network is Private 192.168.xxx.xxx

Now, to answer your question...after you've ditched, unloaded all Internet
Security (but huge $ outlay) software from your PC - just use simply
SmartFTP Client to upload to your Website. You are publishing to an Internet
Web Server correct and not another Home PC/Server?

Hi Keith,

I wanted to publish using FrontPage 2003 because that is the program that
I'm using to create the content. FrontPage automatically keeps the
navigation structure correct when I add/delete/rename pages in my site.
Then FrontPage is able to publish the "Changed Pages" only. If I were to
use a different 3rd party FTP program to upload the changes, I would have to
determine for myself exactly what pages were changed (because of navigation
changes caused by adding or deleting pages ).

I'm in your camp about the security suites, though! Still, with McAfee
completely disabled, the system "hangs" for several minutes at the
conclusion of each FTP upload session in FrontPage. THAT is the problem I'm
trying to correct.

Okie Dokie. Gotcha for the desired result.

I'm not sure but... maybe there is no problem. Maybe that's the way things
are supposed to work?

(I just had an after hours call on a Friday night with an end-user freaking
about a SQL database restore... She was worried that it wasn't all over in 3
minutes - before she went home.! 28 minutes later everything was in
order... It just took time and patience.)

There are some excellent MVP's on this site who, I am sure, can clarify and
assist with the issues you are having. Altho' I do notice that they have not
yet responded.!

Maybe everything is just fine with your modem operandi and, all that's
needed is - end-user patience and experience with the issue at hand?

I did some further testing. I tried to upload the site with FrontPage from
a different computer with a different security suite. The security suite on
the second computer was also completely disabled.

The results were the same. The changed pages uploaded very quickly, but
then the upload process "hung".

I also did a "Detect and Repair..." to FrontPage to see if that would make a
difference. That did not help either.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Most likely this is a issue with the remote FTP server and how it is set to communicate.

contacted to resolve the problem.

New information: Sometimes I abort the file upload while it appears to be
hanging. When I do this, the files usually appear to be successfully
transferred. Sometimes, however, FrontPage crashes. Click on the following

It has to do with two way communication between the FTP server and FP/IE. In some case use will have
to use a 3rd Party FTP application and not FP/IE's FTP

I can successfully upload the files using an older version of WS-FTP LE,
Version 5.08 2000.02.23 (because that's the version I have). Being able to
use FrontPage would be more convenient for complex webs, since it would be
easier to be sure I update ALL changed files, without having to upload
EVERYTHING, changed or not...

Seems like there should be some way to correct the two way communication
problem, though!

Oh well.
