Using header source and data source in Word 2002

This has always worked in previous versions of Word where
data comes in without field names (it's downloaded and
then converted to an Excel file). We have separate header
document which is attached to a main document. However,
if we want to change the data source (using the same
header document) we get a dialogue box asking if this is
a file with a table (not a problem in itself) but
subsequently Word only reads in the data source and
totally ignores the header source with the result that
the actual record detail becomes the field names? Any
solutions out there. When we try using the button for
Open Header source as advised on the MS site, we just get
an error and Word causes an error and exits.

Have you tried setting up the entire merge using the older
user interface (mail merge helper)?
