Using Latitude/Longitude in Visio 2003

I would like to create a Visio drawing that places objects on a map based on
their real latitude/longitude coordinates. I couldn't see a way to setup the
drawing area accordingly. Is this possible and if so could someone provide
some quick steps on what I would need to do.

Will Mappoint let me create connections between them? The drawing I need to
create is a network map. If not, would I be able to at least place the sites
within MapPoint then import that to Visio so I can manipulate it accordingly?
(Sorry I don't know much about MapPoint and couldn't find too much info on it
from the MS website)

It needs to cover the lower 48 states of the US. Within that I have about 300
locations that I need to display. All I need is a dot per location and then
interconnect each dot accordingly. I basically am mapping out a national
fiber network, which I'll then use layers to show/hide various different
logical networks that use it.

If there is an easy way to convert lat/long to a regular Visio type unit and
super-impose that over a map of the US, that would work. The one map of the
US I have seems to be curved but it is also broken down by state. Maybe if I
build each state separately, I can then join it all together? The key is that
formula for converting lat/long to something Visio recognises.
