Using Nicknames for Salutations

I am trying to create a mailmerge document and need the
salutation to read ie, Dear Jack when a first name is John
or Dear Jan when the first name might be Janet. I put the
salutation in the nickname field of the Outlook 2002
contact file, however, I don't seem to be able to find the
nickname field when doing a mail merge.

Any thoughts?
