Using numbering button - numbers whole document

I created a basic template in word...mostly for style. The problem is when I
use the numbering button or bullets button, it applies it to the whole
document (every line). If I do an undo it re-applies the numbering to only
that paragraph or line.

How do I change my document so that this does not happen.

You are so smart. This was driving me crazy! My computer was crashing left
and right. I thought it was going to blow-up. I would hit indent and it would
number every line...
