Using Office 2003 (PE) with Vista

MichaelRobert

I am about to buy a new laptop which I expect will come with Vista. Can I use
my existing copy of Office 2003 Professional Edition with Vista? Are there
Commonly Encountered Problems of which I should be aware?

Thanks.

Office/Outlook 2003 work fine with Windows Vista. You may install it if
your Office version did not come with the old computer. If it did, and is
not a retail version, that version of Office/Outlook is tied to the old
computer and will die with that computer.

Thanks, Milly. I think I have a retail version - I have the CD and box for
it, and I know that it was not part of the Dell standard load - I paid extra
for it so I think I own it for a future machine. How can I confirm that I do
indeed have a retail version?

If you open any Help menu in Office from the old computer, and look at the
product ID, does it contain OEM in its serial number? If not, then you have
a genuine retail version which you are free to install on your new computer.

Thanks again, Milly. I checked and found no 'OEM' in the product ID, so I
guess I'm good to use it on the new lap-top,

I appreciate your help.

There is one minor incompatibility. It's of no consequence, really, but
it's still a flaw.

After loading and updating Office 2003 for Vista, if you're into using the
"office assistants" under help, you're stuck with only one: the paperclip.
If you try to change paperclip to one of the other assistants, you'll get an
error of "not enough memory". I was fortunate enough to "stumble" across a
"fix" on David Overton's blog:

http://uksbsguy.com/blogs/doverton/...ot-not-enough-memory-quot-error-messages.aspx

Again, it's not a significant issue; nonetheless, it is an issue, minor
though it may be.

It bothered me because I enjoyed using the "cat" as my help assistant on
WinXP Pro, but couldn't under Vista. Minor frustration.

Other than that, everything in Office 2003 works fine within the Vista
environment.

Take care,

Ernie

When you get your new computer, make sure that you uninstall any trial
version of Office that the manufacturer may have loaded on the computer
before attempting the Office 2003 install. You will be happy you did.
