Using other lettering systems in Outlines

I'm running Microsoft Word 2004 for Mac, version 11.1.

I'm anticipating doing some pretty sophisticated outlining in the near
future. I'd like to have several different layers of numbering. As it
stands, the only options are Latin letters (uppercase and lowercase),
Arabic numerals, and Roman numerals. Is there any way of changing
this? Can I get the bulleting system to index with Greek or Hebrew
script. I'd particularly like to use Greek, uppercase and lower.

I already know how to customize the different layers, but even with
such customization, I'm limited to the available symbols.

Thanks,
Harryted

Do you have Greek/Hebrew fonts installed? If so, you could change the
numbering font (Customize Outline Numbered List dialog, Font button) then
choose A,B,C as your Number Style and presumably that would increment the
letters in Greek/Hebrew rather than Roman?

Thanks for the reply, Chuck. I did it with the symbol font and now I
have running Greek lettering. I have a couple of Hebrew fonts listed
in my Apple Font Book, but they don't appear in the list of fonts in
Word. Can I make Word use these fonts? Alternatively, can I download
a Hebrew font for Word?

I'm glad Symbol font works for the Greek lettering (I wasn't sure whether it
would inrement properly). As for the Hebrew font - I'm not familiar with the
Apple platform, still I'm surprised that the fonts available on the platform
aren't all listed in Word. I'm just guessing but perhaps Word - regarless of
platform - recognises TrueType fonts so perhaps you could download a Hebrew
TrueType font, install it and see if Word recognises it.

I googled "truetype hebrew font" and came up with a bunch of listings.
Here's a couple. I'm assuming of course that Apple can install TrueType.

Thanks Chuck. I downloaded the Hebrew fonts at the first site. When I
downloaded them (as .ttf files) I simply clicked on their icons and
their dialogue boxes popped up and asked me if I wanted to install them
into Font Book. But even after doing that, I still couldn't get Word
to recognize them.

Oh well, this is hardly the end of the world. I'd love to have a great
collection of different alphabets in my font book available for me to
use in Word. But it really isn't necessary. So, thanks for the help.

You might want to ask over on the MacWord group about the fonts. Fonts and
Word and the Mac are a great mystery to me, but someone should know. It is
certainly possible to add additional fonts to MacWord, because people
frequently complain about seeing them all. I assume you tried quitting and
restarting Word after adding the fonts?

See here for Google/Entourage gateway to newsgroups for MacWord, MacExcel,
and other MS programs for the Mac:
