"Note that the Out of Office Assistant is only available if you have the
Microsoft Exchange Server service in your profile." I don't know what that
means. When I went to the advanced options menu, all of the boxes were
checked but the OOO asst. was not visible. I am using Windows XP.

Microsoft Exchange server is an email server most commonly used in
businesses, but not always. If you connect to a Microsoft Exchange server
where you work, you would see the Out of Office Assistant in your Tools. If
you don't connect to Microsoft Exchange for email, then it would not be an
available option for you.

For example, if your place of business uses Lotus Notes or you're a home
user with a POP3 account for email, you will not be able to use the Out of
Office Assistant.
However, you can set up a rule that works similarly but would have to leave
Outlook open and running the entire time you would want the auto-reply to
work.
