Using outlook 2002 with modem as a phone

Hello world!

I am trying to make telephone calls to contacts in my
Outlook contacts. I'd like to right click a contact, and
be able to call them through Outlook.

For this purpose, I have purchased a microphone headset,
which plugs into my sound card's 'audio in' port. The
headset is verified to work: I can record input from the
headset in other Windows applications.

I've run into a few problems trying to use the 'Call
Contact' feature in Outlook 2002. Dialing out to the
contact is fine, there is no problem in establishing a
connection.

My problems is, that Outlook isn't using the input from
my headset for the voice call. When I call a contact,
nothing I say into the headset is heard by the other
party. Additionally, nothing that the other party says is
heard from my computer speakers.

Two questions:
What audio streams does Outlook use for phone calls? I
have a feeling that Outlook is totally ignoring the input
from my microphone headset. But then again, I can't hear
anything that the other party is saying: is Outlook
ignoring the audio input stream too, or is this whole
issue a problem with my modem?

Is there any way I can figure out whether the problem is it
being caused by Outlook, or my modem?

YOu need to pick up the handset on your phone for voice calling to work. If
your headphone integrates with the telephone, then using the headset
connected to the telephone would work.

Per http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;274163, with
similar articles written for Outlook 9 and 98, just not published for some
reason in 2002(XP) the phone feature in outlook is a link to the Phone
Dialer in the OS and was never designed to facilite truning your computer
into a speaker phone, but rather a HUGE speedialer memory were the desk
phone still needs to be used.
