Using Outlook 2003 with Word 2007 as e-mail Editor

I'm about to replace the Office 2003 Home and Student Edition with Office
2007 H&SE.

I'm using currently using Outlook 2003 with Word 2003 as the e-mail editor.

I don't want (or need) to spend the money to also get Outlook 2007 (which
doesn't come packaged with Office 2007 H&SE).

Question is: Will Outlook 2003 use Word 2007 as the e-mail editor, or will I
have to maintain Word 2003 on the computer after installing Office 2007?

Thanks in advance.

Interesting question. I look forward to learning the answer too. I didn't
understand Millie's reply.

Well, CGB, I took the plunge and installed Office 2007 but left Office 2003
in place thinking (naively) that Outlook 2003 would still use Word 2003 as
the e-mail editor.

I was wrong.

Despite the fact that Word 2003 is still there, Outlook can't find it so I
can no longer use Word (2003 or 2007) as the e-mail editor.

Did Microsoft simply overlook this in designing its software or is it a ploy
to force us all to buy Outlook 2007?

Perhaps there is a hack to the registry that would fix it, but I don't have
the enthusiasm to try and find it.

I have the same problem but curiously it worked for months before
complaining. I suspect a recent automatic "update" was reall a "downdate"

was there ever any update to this? I would like to keep outlook 2003 and
office 03, but also let me users transition into word/excel/powerpoint and it
seems since installing office 07, i still cannot use word 03 as the email
editor for outlook 03 since the install.

I have the same problem too! It's driving me nuts. Due to legacy software, we
must keep Office 2003 on our machines. Because you can't run two versions of
Outlook on the same machine, we have to not install Outlook 2007, but the
rest of Office 2007 is OK. After doing this Outlook 2003 cannot find Word
2003 as the email editor as mentioned by others above.

To fix this, just "repair" your Office 2003 installation using the Setup
program. Please re-boot after doing so (even if it doesn't tell you to) just
to make sure all is OK. This worked for me. However, after re-booting, files
with the .docx extension then refused to open in Word 2007, but rather
converted and opened in Word 2003. If you can put up with this behaviour,
then at least your Outlook problem has gone.

It's as if you can't have 2 versions of Word (2003 and 2007) on your PC
either.

Anyone else know anything more about this?
